4 Factors that can Make or Break your Site’s Ranking!

4 ranking factors
Unless you have been living in another planet you must be aware of the ongoing changes that Google is making to shake off spammy sites from SERP. Whether Google is winning the battle or hardcore blackhat marketers are having their ways, is another story. But one thing is becoming more and more apparent while dealing with several dozen sites (our own and that of clients) - there are 4 key factors where you should put maximum focus if you are doing back link building of any kind.

Key Factor #1 The content surrounding your backlink

Key Factor #1: The content surrounding your backlink

If you are backlinking to a page about ‘Labrador training’ , the page and paragraph from which you are adding the backlink should ideally be about ‘labrador training’ or about ‘dog training’ rather than on ‘dog breeding’.

Key Factor 2 Overall theme of the site from which you are backlinking

Key Factor #2: Overall theme of the site from which you are backlinking

If your money site is about ‘labrador training’ and your backlink is from a  site about ‘cute kitten pics’ , you are wasting your time. Thematic relevance has become more important these days and I believe it will become even more important in future.

Key Factor 3 Anchor text of your backlinks.

Key Factor #3: Anchor text of your backlinks.

This one is a biggie! Continuing with the example of ‘labrador training’ money page....  if you are backlinking with anchor text ‘labrador training’, you are setting yourself up for failure! I have tested this again and again. Your exact match anchor text should not be more than 5% of your total backlinks. So for example – if you have 100 backlinks for the ‘labrador training’ page, your exact match anchor text should not be more than 4-5. All other backlinks should be a mix of - branded links, general keyword links or naked urls. Ensure that the content surrounding these urls are contextually relevant and your target keyword is incorporated in the same sentence that contains the backlink. And of course your exact match anchor text should be planted in domains which have high Trust Factor (TF).

Key Factor #4: Clean link Profile

Be careful about the link profile of  Tier 1 links you are sending to your money site. If these Tier 1 links have spammy backlinks you will see diminishing return for your time and effort. It’s best to have clean links backlinks for your Tier 1 links as well. Remember, these days it is more about quality of link than the quantity.

So how do you take care of all the 4 factors?
